2024

Pu Songling: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio: created by Smith and Gilmour with the company. A presentation of the 2nd phase of development took place on March 30th.


Smith and Gilmour are invited to teach an intensive workshop in physical theatre to a diverse group of 4th year students of Shakespeare at Queen's University, Kingston in January.


2023

Smith and Gilmour offer an intensive storytelling workshop to students at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in November


Metamorphoses 2023: Created by Smith and Gilmour with the company. Premieres at Crow's Theatre in association with Crow's Theatre in March/April.


2021/22

Metamorphoses Short Films: continue documenting our creative process with Videographer Lyon Smith.  Several stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses are adapted for film in collaboration with Juniper Island Productions throughout 2021 and 2022


2020

Metamorphoses 2020 created by Smith and Gilmour with the company. In April the production premiere is scheduled to perform at the Theatre Centre, Toronto, but is cancelled due to COVID.


In August Smith and Gilmour are invited by Dopo Lavoro Teatrale to co-create and perform in The Right Way at the Venice Biennale, Italy. 


Metamorphoses Short Films: development begins in October working with Videographer Lyon Smith.


2010s 

 2010 
Grimm too in association with Factory Theatre, Toronto was presented in February 2010. Smith and Gilmour adapted several stories from the Brothers Grimm.

2011
Lu Xun Blossoms invited to perform at the Luminato Festival in Toronto, Ontario

2012
As I Lay Dying workshop production at the Theatre Centre, Toronto, Ontario. This production perfectly captured Smith and Gilmour’s passion to create physical theatre with a beautiful text.

2013
As I Lay Dying premiere at the Theatre Passe Muraille. Five Dora Award Nominations

Death Married My Daughter created by Michele Smith, Nina Gilmour, Danya Buonastella and Dean Gilmour. A bouffon-inspired show with Shakespeare's Ophelia and Desdemona who come back from the dead to denounce Hamlet and Othello. The show had a successful run at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2013 and was chosen Best of the Fringe with an extended run. It remounted at The Theatre Centre in 2014 through the Riser Project. Later that season it played In The Soil Arts Festival in St Catherines, Ontario which lead to an invitation to do a residency at Brock University in 2015. The show has been invited to do a residency at the University of Victoria in 2021.

2014
The Assholes,another bouffon-inspired original creation denouncing the assholes of our current world and inspired by the painting, The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. Created with Nina Gilmour, Danya Buonastella and Marrissa Zinni. It was first invited to the Festival of Clowns in Toronto in 2015 and later premiered at the Factory Theatre in 2016.  

Death Married My Daughter is remounted at the Theatre Centre in the first Riser Project. Theatre Smith-Gilmour co-produces the first Riser Project at the Theatre Centre with WhyNot Theatre.

Ralph & Lina written by Dan Watson, Christina Serra and Michele Smith. Part of the first Riser Project at the Theatre Centre. Co-produced with Ahuri Theatre and WhyNot Theatre. Four Dora Nominations. 

2015
Death Married My Daughter invited to the In the Soil Festival, St Catherines, Ontario

2016
Death Married My Daughter invited to do a residency at Brock University-performance and Bouffon Workshop.

As I Lay Dying invited to perform at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa. Performed for 5000 people.

The Assholes work-in-progress performance at the Factory Theatre.

2017
As I Lay Dying invited to tour at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, High Performance Rodeo, Calgary and Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver. Performed for 4779 people.

Les Misérables work-in-progress performances at the Factory Theatre.

2018
Les Misérables created by Michele Smith and Dean Gilmour with the company performed at the Theatre Centre, Toronto

Pu SongLing: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio: In April 2018 Smith and Gilmour were invited to Kunming, China to work with actors from the Yunnan Provincial Theatre and teachers from the Arts University of Yunnan adapting short stories from the great Chinese writer Pu SongLing.

    Dante’s Inferno workshop created by Smith and Gilmour with the company at the Factory Theatre.

    Dante’s Inferno premiere at the Factory Theatre, Toronto. A Smith and Gilmour adaptation of part one of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy starring David Danzon, Diana Tso, Christian Laurin, Dean Gilmour and Nikki Pascetta. Directed by Michele Smith.

    1984
    O Canayen! – Theatre Passe Muraille, Toronto. We brought together two clowns from Belgium: Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon; an indigenous actress: Shirly Cheechoo and a composer: Micah Barnes to create a clown version of the history of Canada.

    1985
    Carmen, An Opera for Two Clowns – Theatre Centre, Toronto. We studied with an opera singer to make jokes about opera.

    1986
    You Either Fly or Fall – The Poor Alex, Toronto

    Commedia, A Tale of Passion (by Carlo Gozzi, adaptation by Smith/Gilmour) – Theatre Centre, Toronto. Our first Commedia dell’arte adaptation.

    1987
    Co-founded The Poor Alex Group with Crow’s & Theatre Columbus

    Rites of Spring – The Poor Alex (produced with Theatre Beyond Words) Dora nomination. Nina Gilmour was one year old and took her first steps on stage.

    The Green Bird  – The Poor Alex,
